3 Tips to Get Your Mind Right as a Mama

You’re 15 pounds heavier than you used to be. Your boobs no longer belong to you. Your hips are wider. Your hair is shedding by the pound.

And you’ve turned into a MEAN GIRL.

Yup, you are the ultimate Regina George. You are SO freakin’ mean.

To yourself. You are MEAN to yourself.

You’re telling yourself that you’re fat, ugly, gross. I’m guilty of it every other day! But those toxic thoughts need to GO. We have some major thought work to do! In order to be the BEST mama for your little, you need to be the BEST version of YOU! And YOU are amazing. So here are 3 ways to change up that negative mindset and get your mind RIGHT so you can show up as the badass awesome mama that you are!

  1. WOULD YOU SAY THIS TO YOUR BEST FRIEND?
When you’re having a mean, negative thought about yourself, ask yourself: “Would I say this to my BFF? My sister? My daughter? My husband?” The answer is probably a big NO! No, you would NOT tell your sister that she looks fat today. No, you would NOT tell your daughter that her butt is too big. And you probably wouldn’t say these things to strangers even…or people you dislike either. You’re not walking your dog and telling the mail carrier that she looks ugly today, do you? No. So STOP saying things to YOURSELF that you wouldn’t say to someone else.

  2. REMIND YOURSELF HOW AMAZING YOU ARE.
Your body just performed a MIRACLE. You made a whole human being from SCRATCH. And now your boobs are producing milk for that person! That is PHENOMENAL. When those MEAN thoughts start creeping in, remind yourself how remarkable your body is. You can CHOOSE to switch up your thought and flip it from negative to positive...or at least not so negative! If you’re one to forget such a thing, then write it on a post it and stick it on your bathroom mirror. Put is as the wallpaper on your phone. Whatever you need to do, do it. Negative thoughts are totally normal, but we CAN choose to change it and think differently.

  3. DO ONE THING EACH DAY THAT MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD.
“Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy.” Happy people just don’t say mean things to themselves. Okay. I’m really dating myself here with these old movie references, aren’t I?! But for real, endorphins make you happy. Exercise is one great endorphins booster, but there are other ways to boost endorphins, too! Yoga, dark chocolate, spicy foods, giving, laughing…interesting ways to get that endorphin rush! But the bottom line is to do ONE THING every single day that makes you feel really, really good. The happier you are, the less likely you are to have these mean things to say to YOU.

If you are truly unable to think a positive thought, PLEASE talk to your doctor. Postpartum depression affects about 1 in 8 women and I encourage you to talk to your doctor if you are experiencing any symptoms of postpartum depression or postpartum anxiety.
